Itinerary

Day 01: Alajuela
We will meet you at the Juan Santamaria Airport and transfer you to the Hotel Best Western Irazú, located 15 minutes away. The hotel’s 328 rooms have a/c, wireless Internet, coffee maker, tv, bathrooms with hot water shower, hair dryer, clothes iron, safe box, and much more…

Day 02: Volcán Poas / San Gerardo de Rivas.
After breakfasting at the hotel, we are off to nearby Poas Volcano National Park, located in the Central Valley of Costa Rica, featuring one of the largest craters in the world. Afterwards we journey 4 hours, passing through the heart of San Jose and enjoying the spectacular views of the countryside on our way south along the Interamerican Highway, to the beautiful community of San Gerardo de Rivas where we will spend the night in a gorgeous mountain lodge.

Day 03: Hiking at Cloudbridge Reserve and visit to Hot Springs
We begin the day with a hearty country breakfast then take a relaxing hike along the trails of Cloudbridge Reserve, enjoying fresh air and viewing birds, mammals and insects native to these impressive forests. And what better way to end a day of hiking than with a soak in natural hot springs in the middle of the forest. A family operation maintains two pools and services, including a small restaurant.

Day 04: Horseback Riding / San Vito
After breakfast we’ll enjoy the splendor of San Gerardo de Rivas on horseback, departing afterwards for the community of San Vito in the South of Cost Rica, near the Panamanian border, a mountainous city with a cool climate and so many places to discover.

Day 05: Wilson Botanical Garden and Coffee Tour
After breakfast at the hotel we will visit the Las Cruces Biological Station and Wilson Botanical Garden, which protects more than 300 hectares of premontane cloud forest. It supports a huge diversity of life namely, 2000 species of plants, over 400 species of bird and 113 mammals.

The Wilson Botanical Garden, perhaps the most well known in Central America, has beautiful and impressive collections of tropical and subtropical ornamentals, exotics, and families on the brink of extinction, both native to Costa Rica and other places. It boasts the second largest collection of Palms in the world. The best represented groups are ferns, araceas, bromeliads, gingers, heliconias, marantas and of course, palms.

In the afternoon we’ll take a tour of a coffee processing plant and several small coffee farms and you’ll discover just what it takes to make a great cup of coffee. San Vito and environs produces a very high quality coffee – artisan-quality in the case of the family operations that produce as well as cultivate.

Day 06: Canopy Tour/ Puerto Jiménez
After breakfast in San Vito we descend from the mountain climate and journey the mere 2 hours to the coast, where we will enjoy a 3 kilometer-long canopy adventure through primary rain forest and impressive views of the the Golfo Dulce. We continue on the the town of Puerto Jiménez on the Osa Peninsula, where you’ll have the afternooon free to enjoy beaches or walking around town.

Day 07: Rainforest Hike
The Matapalo Reserve adjacent to Corcovado National Park has been describes by National Geographic as the most biologically intense place on Earth, since it is home to 2.5% all known biological species of the planet: 124 mammals, 137 birds, 117 reptiles and amphibians, 60 species of fresh water fish and 70 species of marine crab.

We’ll spend the night at the Hotel La Leona, a paradise between ocean and rainforest.

Day 08
Breakfast and return to Puerto Jiménez to take flight back to airport in San Jose.
